Welcome to Singing You Home, the home site for a Winnipeg based Comfort Choir.  We exist to offer gentle and lovely songs to the ill and the dying, at bedside in homes, nursing homes, hospitals or Palliative Care Units.

Music has the power to soothe and comfort people in distress, whether the upset be emotional, physical or spiritual.  Debasish Mridha wrote, “Music can heal the wounds which medicine cannot touch.”  At the end of life, the last sense to diminish in the body, is the sense of hearing.  For millenia, humans have sat vigil with their dying loved ones, and often that vigil has been augmented by song, through chants, hymns of faith, or quiet humming.  In westernized cultures, this singing at the threshold of death has diminished in recent centuries, as hospitalization (or institutionalization) became the norm for those terminally ill or approaching the end of life.  As families are less familiar with singing as a practice of love, community and spirituality, they may not remember the great resource of music as a source of comfort and connection.

Singing You Home is a resource to support friends and families to bring the gift of song back to the bedside. It is our calling to offer kindness and comfort to those at the thresholds of living and dying. Gentle voices, simple songs, and compassion bestows  ease and reassurance to clients, family, and caregivers alike. At the request of a family member, staff member or patient advocate, a group of 3 to 5 singers can be invited to come and offer songs at bedside to bring a sense of peace, ease and comfort to the patient.  The singers offer vocal music only, no accompaniment, and will sing for 20 minutes, or perhaps a bit longer if the client (patient) seems to respond well.

Singing You Home  is not entertainment or performance. We view our offering of song as a gift of peaceful presence, and harmonious compassion.  Using the voice of lullaby and gentle love songs, we bring vocal compassion to the bedside.

Our songs come from a variety of traditions, both religious and secular, and from various cultures.  All the songs are quiet, simple harmonies or rounds, with lyrics that affirm life and letting go, the ebb and flow of life, and the beauty of love and relationships.  If requested, songs of faith can be offered from some religious traditions.

We are NOT ‘music therapists’ and make no claims to such skill. Hearts alive with love, we feel honoured to share our voices with those at the threshold of life and death.

In the service of love,

Dianne Baker, Founder/Coordinator of ‘Singing You Home’.

“Music, uniquely among the arts, is both completely abstract and profoundly emotional. It has no power to represent anything particular or external, but it has a unique power to express inner states or feelings. Music can pierce the heart directly; it needs no mediation.”

Have you ever drifted off to sleep as someone sang to you? Do you remember the lullabies sung to you when you were tiny? What emotions rise in you with the word ‘lullaby’?
There is a new group of gentle singers rehearsing together to bring soft voices, harmonies and tones of comfort to the bedside of the ill and the dying, in and around Winnipeg. “Singing You Home” is the manifestation of a long held hope of Dianne Baker to bring songs of love, affirmation and release to people living their last days. As long as humans have lived in community, we have been awed by the mystery of the transition from life to death, this final observable threshold the self crosses as breath wanes. In recent years, a practice called “Threshold Choirs” has begun to offer tender vocal music to ease this transition. (https://thresholdchoir.org) While not affiliated with Threshold Choir, “Singing You Home” shares this same vision.

Do you know of someone in hospital, a nursing home, or in Palliative Care in a hospital or a private home who would benefit from a visit by a group (3 to 5 people) to sing for up to 30 minutes in gentle, harmonious a cappella style?  Consider inviting “Sing You Home”  to offer music comfort at bedside.

The repetoire includes simple songs, sung repetitively and quietly, songs that emphasize the affirming, loving quality of life and spirit connection.  Some specific songs or hymns may be requested, otherwise the choices will be made by the singers.
